Three martyrs of Alexandria commemorated together by the Church, of whom few details survive.
Saints Sophia, Irene, and Castor are three early Christian martyrs venerated together by the Eastern Orthodox Church, of whom only the barest details survive. According to the OCA Synaxarion, Saint Sophia endured martyrdom alongside Saints Castor and Irene in Alexandria, Egypt.
Liturgical calendars identify them as 3rd-century figures who were put to death by the sword. Their principal commemoration falls on September 18, and Sophia and Irene are additionally remembered on August 28; no extended narrative of their lives or sufferings has been preserved.
Eastern Orthodox liturgical calendars for September 18 list Martyrs Sophia and Irene of Egypt, put to death by the sword, together with Martyr Castor of Alexandria. The same calendars cross-reference August 28, where Sophia and Irene are also commemorated, reflecting the common Orthodox practice of remembering saints on more than one date.
For churches following the Revised Julian (new) calendar, the September 18 commemoration is observed on October 1.
