The Holy Hieromartyr Sulpicius, Bishop of Bayeux

Life

Sulpicius was a ninth-century bishop of Bayeux in north-western Gaul who was killed during the Viking raids on the region and is venerated as a hieromartyr. He held the see of Bayeux from about 838 and is counted among the city's early bishops. He is commemorated on September 4 and numbered among the pre-schism Western saints venerated as Orthodox.

According to the surviving notices, Sulpicius was martyred by Viking raiders at Livry in Normandy, in or about the year 843. Little else of his life is recorded; the sources preserve essentially his episcopal office, the period of his rule, and the circumstances of his death amid the Norman incursions that disrupted the succession of bishops at Bayeux.
